A “500 metres to the centre” line on a hotel page is often not enough to decide. Five hundred metres is one thing on a flat seafront road, another on a steep slope in Kalkan, another across a six-lane road, and another on a pedestrian street. Use the map to see the daily friction of the holiday, not only to measure distance.
Turn on satellite view
The relationship between the hotel and the sea, the road, empty land and neighbouring buildings becomes clearer. You can see how a “near the sea” property actually reaches the shore.
Actually run the walking route
Look at the pedestrian route, not the straight-line distance. A bridge, an overpass or a winding entrance can change the distance.
Check the slope
Map distance does not describe gradient. Searching guest reviews for phrases such as “hill, steep, yokuş, merdiven” is especially useful in coastal towns.
Look at the evening surroundings
Are there restaurants, a market, a pharmacy and a walkable area around the hotel? On a trip without a car, these can matter more than room size.
A public-transport stop is not enough on its own
Check which line stops there and whether you can reach where you are going without a transfer.
Street View and photo dates
Images can be old. If building and road layout have changed, compare them with current user photos.
Noise clues
See surroundings on the map such as a main road, nightclub, event space, school or construction. Look at a repeating pattern in current reviews, not a single negative comment.
A final test
Build three separate routes from the hotel: morning coffee, the midday main activity and dinner. If all three are a chore, the “good location” label is not right for your trip.
A last check before booking
Check the dates, the number of people and children’s ages, the room category, the board type, the cancellation deadline and the total amount payable one last time. For seasonal services and weather-dependent activities, confirm current information close to the trip directly with the relevant business or an official source.
The limit of map evidence
Street View can show imagery from earlier dates; current coverage and historical date choices are not available everywhere. Use maps to screen options, then ask the property directly about critical details such as an accessible entrance or ongoing construction. Reference: Google Maps Street View help.
